Ferreira

Ferreira is the name which captures the spirit and essence of Portugal. Revered by the Portuguese as a symbol of quality, its name is synonymous with time-honoured traditions, and a dedication to the creation of Port wines.

Established in the Douro Valley in 1751, Ferreira owes much of its success to its founder José Ferreira. His early influence has consistently enabled the family to produce award winning Ports of outstanding quality. The Ferreira family has been producing Port for nearly two hundred and fifty years and the present management represents its eighth generation. This continuity of culture ensures impeccable quality control and the creation of fine Port wines. The best wines come from the remotest parts of the Alto Douro, and it was Dona Antonia Adelaide Ferreira, great granddauther of José Ferreira, who opened new roads and paths to gain access to these distant and isolated lands. Some of these once inaccessible areas belong to Ferreira, covering a total of 150 hectares under vine.

Ferreira's vineyards are planted on steep slopes and the ground is arid and schistous. The oldest and most prestigious farm, Quinta do Porto, dates back to 1771, whilst the newest vineyard, Quinta da Leda, is located in the Eastern end of the Douro. Facing Quinta do Porto across the Douro river lies Quinta do Seixo, an extensive vineyard where Ferreira has its main vinification installations. Further up the river is Quinta do Caedo, which contributes greatly to many of Ferreira's Vintage Ports.
