Château Mont-Redon

"Mourredon" was known in 1334 and even at that time there were vines there. For more than six centuries now, this piece of land containing a papal castle has been covered in vines. Mont-Redon belonged to an episcopal domain and that was where it paid its taxes. In the middle of the 18th century it belonged to a nobleman, Joseph-Ignace d'Astier of Avignon, a lawyer and doctor of law. The domain then passed into the hands of the Mathieus, descendants of d'Astier. Anselme Mathieu, nicknamed "the poet of kisses" styled himself Marquis de Mont-Redon and, on the death of his father, worked the domain with his brothers. Catastrophes then struck: first phylloxera which ravaged the vineyard, then the death of Clare, mother of the poet and the property and assets were divided up. In 1923, Mont-Redon was acquired by the Plantin family. Henri took on the task of pulling the properties back together, giving the domain its present form which covers 162 hectares in total with more than 100 planted to vines. Château Mont-Redon has been a family property for three generations now but for centuries has had its vineyard and its tradition of fine wines.
