Château ClarkeThe origins of the domain go back to the 12th century when the Cistercians monks of the abbey of Vertheuil established the first vines. It the name of "Granges” was given at that time. Much later, it was purchased in 1771 by an Irishman Tobie CLARKE. Unfortunately, he hardly had time to benefit from its acquisition since he died the same year. The name of Château Clarke was given to the domain by his elder son Luc-Tobie CLARKE in 1818 (the first castle was built by the preceding owner the Sire PENNE between 1760 and 1771). At the time of its acquisition by Baron Edmond de Rothschild in 1973, the property had sunk in the lapse of memory; composed of cultivated meadows, fields, waste lands and wood, all the buildings were more or less in ruin. Just like a phoenix, the domain was reborn from its ashes thanks to the impassioned will of the Baron. The vineyard is completely replanted between 1973 and 1976. The buildings for their part are entirely renovated to regain their aspect of origin (except for the castle, demolished in the Fifties and which was not rebuilt).Château Clarke in Quebec Château Clarke in Ontario Château Clarke in Manitoba |
