Banfi

In 1977, brothers John and Harry Mariani achieved something they had dreamed about for many years: the acquisition of virgin land, upon which they began to plant the vines (both traditional - Sangiovese Grosso and innovative - international vitis vinifera plantings), located in the marvelous region of Italy called Tuscany, the home of a great wine of international renown, Brunello di Montalcino. In its previous ownership, the operation had been called Castello alle Mura; the Mariani brothers rechristened it Castello Banfi.
Ezio Rivella, a winemaker with an international reputation, was given the mandate of completing the second part of their dream, the production of very high quality wines. After much research and experimentation on the different terroirs of the property and the different clones of Sangiovese Grosso found in Montalcino, Ezio Rivella decided not only to plant the best adapted Sangiovese clones but also to introduce grape varieties from other countries of Europe: Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.
